Coming up on Tuesday 22nd September at Green Hammerton Village Hall we have Professor David Petts from Durham University who will be sharing his knowledge about the fascinating archaeology and history of Lindisfarne (Holy Island), one of Britain’s most important historic and religious sites.
Professor David Petts and his team have spent recent years carrying out archaeological excavations on Holy Island, uncovering remarkable evidence from one of Britain’s most important early Christian centres. Their discoveries include early medieval burials, beautifully carved stone grave markers and new insights into the famous monastery that placed Lindisfarne at the heart of the Anglo-Saxon world.
Known as the cradle of Christianity in northern England, Lindisfarne is connected to the mainland only by a tidal causeway and is cut off by the sea twice each day. The island became famous throughout Europe following the devastating Viking raid of AD 793, an event often regarded as the beginning of the Viking Age.
This illustrated talk will explore the latest archaeological discoveries and reveal how cutting-edge research is transforming our understanding of the monks, pilgrims, settlers and invaders who shaped the island’s extraordinary history over more than thirteen centuries.
