Join us for our next event on Tuesday 19th November from 1930 at Green Hammerton Village Hall.
Beyond Viking Yorkshire – Alex Harvey
When the Great Heathen Army conquered York in 866, what effect did this have on the hinterlands of the city? How did the local folk of pre-Yorkshire react? What, even, was Yorkshire like at this time, long before the shirring system divided the lands into the county we know (and love) today? In this talk, a chronology of York and the surrounding area from the pre-Roman Iron Age up to the Late Viking Age will be discussed to better analyse the linguistic, archaeological, and territorial contributions the Vikings did (or perhaps did not) make to this monolithic entity we nowadays call the Danelaw. But what is even meant by that term, and is it a help or a hindrance to discussions of this time period?
Alex Harvey is a postgraduate history student at the University of York with a focus on Scandinavian York. He has written for numerous journals and has presented research for York Archaeological Trust, Lancaster Historical Postgraduate Conference, and Leeds International Medieval Congress. Through a desire to disseminate complex academic theory and developments into an engaging and entertaining format. He has recently published his second book – Forgotten Vikings.

This talk will be held at the Green Hammerton Village Hall (ghrc.co.uk – please note this is a different venue to most of our previous activities). Please arrive from 1915 onwards with the talk to begin promptly at 1930. Cost will be £5 and tea/coffee will be provided.
