Upcoming Talk – Landscape and Social Change in the hinterlands of Roman Aldborough – 17th June

In 2007, a Roman period lead-lined coffin was discovered at Hundayfield Farm, Grafton. This discovery lead to a large-scale landscape and geophysical survey of the surrounding area, prior to a 12 month programme of excavation. In this talk, Dr Nick Wilson will discuss the results of his research which looked at how the nearby Roman period settlement of Isurium Brigantum (Aldborough) influenced both the organisation of the landscape and the social changes which occurred there.…

Upcoming Talk – Knaresborough Hoard, 28th February

On Friday 28th February we’re hosting our first event of 2025; come and learn about the mystery of the Roman Knaresborough Hoard – local history on your doorstep! In 1864 the country’s largest ever discovery of late Roman copper-alloy vessels was made near Knaresborough. Recent work by a team based at Newcastle University, in collaboration with the Yorkshire Museum, has led to fresh understanding of this amazing hoard. Prof James Gerrard, an archaeologist based at…

Our first excavation

Last weekend we undertook our first excavation, excavating the surface of the Roman road in Green Hammerton. The work was split over two days, and we were very well guided by Jon Kenny to make sure we were doing things properly. Day 1 Local resident Chris was on hand first thing to take off the top layer of the surface with his mini-digger. This was an absolute godsend as it saved us a lot of…

Fieldwalking Day – 1st September

We had a great day field walking this past weekend – thanks to all those who came down to help and those that made a donation to help us run further activities! All very much appreciated! For this session we covered part of the upper end of the field, closer to houses: The conditions on the ground made it trickier than the stretch of fields at the bottom that we covered last year, but nevertheless…

Fieldwalking Report – 23/24th September

Our first fieldwork days are done! Thank you very much to everyone that came along to the open fieldwalking day on Sunday, as you can see from the photos we had a great turn out of both adults and younger archaeologists. The fieldwalking took place in the field close to Helensfield nature area, between New Lane and Red Lane: This field was chosen as it is the route the Roman Road takes from Skipbridge and…

Upcoming Event – Green Hammerton Field Walking

We’ve got exciting news from the GHAS committee – there’s an upcoming chance to get hands on in our search for the Green Hammerton Roman Road!  We have permission with the landowner for a surface survey of the field between Ambretone Park and Helenfield.  This has been organised around the current crop rotation so our access window is very limited.  Consequently on Sunday 24th September we’re asking for your support in doing a field walk to look…

Upcoming Event – The Battle of Byland

On the 29th of September at 7.00pm Little Ouseburn Village Hall, the award winning author Harry Pearson will be giving a presentation about the Battle of Old Byland. This was a significant battle fought in 1322 during the Scottish Wars of Independence, between the forces of King Edward II of England and King Robert I (˜the…

Finds Day Glassware

As many of you will know, GHAS held a Finds Day at the end of last year, where people were invited to bring anything they had found of historical significance around the village. We had pottery, toys and figurines, maps and more brought to the Village club, where we photographed them and mapped out exactly where they were found to determine the archaeological hotspots around the village. This was very successful and one such example…

Geophysics Survey at Kirk Hammerton

On a sunny Saturday in June, several of the GHAS committee took part in a geophysics survey in Kirk Hammerton. There was an amazing turn out for this community archaeology day, with 60 members of the local community taking part. I think the fantastic weather really helped as well! The site in question is a investigation into a possible Neolithic henge at Kirk Hammerton, which Tony Hunt from YAA mapping has discovered. This has had…
